Corn Fiasco

Aside from corn hitting a record $7.87 per bushel, the most shocking factor is that the United States continues to import costly foreign oil and subsidize the export of its equivalent. It is beyond my understanding why during a deficit, we continue to produce a product in which the financial negatives outweigh the positives. Then again, what exactly are the positives? Rattner suggests that not only does ethanol not live up to its environmental promises, ethanol consumes more energy than it produces. However, we should not just consider Rattner’s arguments, but research for ourselves! Perhaps if everyone informed themselves, we could prevent slip-ups similar to that of politician Al Gore who initially was swept into supporting ethanol subsidies, only to change his mind at a later date. We have to understand that just because the media portrays ethanol or any other product as energy efficient, cost effective or innovative does not necessarily mean that it is.
