We are two students at Shawnee State University who both have previously participated in the Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Fellowship program (M3C). Dot Flanagan is a senior studying fine arts with a concentration in visualist design and interactive media, and is an active member of the SSU Habitat Club and Catholic Student Association. Danielle Boyles is a senior studying natural sciences with a concentration in chemistry, and is active in the SSU Habitat Club and Premed Club. Both of us are 25 years old and grew up in Scioto County our whole lives. We enjoy working with the community as much as possible.
This summer we are working with the Portsmouth Pantry Garden, where we will grow and harvest fresh organic fruits and vegetables which will be given to local food pantries. The garden is being completely ran by donations and volunteers from the community. One of our main goals is to expand the program to be able to help more food pantries in the area as we are only able to help a few where there are over two dozen in the county. We are very concerned about food programs in the area and would like to try to bring awareness to such programs as Scioto County is one of ten Ohio counties that has 40-45% of it's population that is eligible for emergency food (resource link). Through our service this summer, we hope to create enough awareness to the county that other groups and organizations would be influenced to create similar programs.
